‘Crossword’ is a dance piece that looks into the rhythmical and emotional reaction of dancers to voices talking in a foreign language.
Four dancers are each presented with a different everyday dialogue upon which they emotionally react and create certain dance moves. They are then dancing all together to a choir of 4 voices, changing their initial movements to match the rhythm and dynamic of the sound.
The sound of the voices is the focus of the work, thus, the idea of incorporating that into the costumes through the different sound waves of each voice was used. Lines of different shapes were derived from the tone and dynamic of each voice and drawn on each costume to reflect on the situation.
The final costume designs aim to keep the everyday feeling of the dialogues but also represent the emotion and rhythm of each different piece.
