Performance Design
'Woyzeck', by Georg Büchner, 2015
A conceptual project in the Studio space of Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.
Set Design
The design refers to themes of human existence, of natural vs social forces and of free will, addressing the question of whether we are manipulated and brainwashed by the society today, as Woyzeck is manipulated by his superiors.
A laboratory space, filled with television screens that refer to and advertise objects mentioned in the scrip, and with jars containing brains and eyes, gives hints about how people today are manipulated by the media. .
Costume Design
The costume designs intent to maintain the reference to the army made in the play and the hierarchy that exists within the military society, similarly to the society we live in. Details in the costumes are used to distinguish those in higher from the lower in status.
Woyzeck has stings attached to his hands which in turn are attached to the ceiling of the room to act as strings of a puppet and emphasize the fact that he is manipulated in this environment.
The Showman is made as a wise old man, as he is the only character in the play that shows the truth and has knowledge of what is actually taking place in the society. Being a puppeteer he emphasizes and comments on the fact that Woyzeck is a puppet treated like an animal. The animals referred in the play are his puppets.
